First explain what the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Get Talking project is all about. You could say something like this – or you can say whatever you think best:
“Sainsbury’s, the supermarket chain, has developed Active Kids. This is a campaign that helps us to be more active and healthy. Active Kids now wants us to help them come up with some exciting new ideas for their next schools’ and groups’ project.
Sainsbury’s has already thought of five basic Active Ideas. They want young people like us to help them work out the details and to decide which ideas we like best. We can even come up with our own idea if we like. They also want to know what our school is missing or needs help with and how one of the Active Kids idea could help with that.
The school council/forum will be leading the project in our school or group, they will be making sure everyone gets to have their say and to help us come up with some brilliant ideas. Then we'll sort out all your suggestions, choose the best ones and send them online to Sainsbury’s. It’s also a great way for the school council/forum to find out how we can do more for our school or group.
If our idea is chosen, our school or group may become a regional consultant school or group, which means we'll be invited to a big conference where we will help decide on how Sainsbury’s can support every school or group in the country.”
You can win some fantastic Prizes.
The five Active Ideas we have to think about are:
Active Kids Time
Sainsbury’s will help us to have more clubs and activities to enjoy at lunchtimes or after school. What do you think these clubs and activities should be?
Active Kids Alternative Sports
Sainsbury’s will help us to try out all sorts of different sports that we haven’t tried before. What should these sports be? And how could Sainsbury’s help our school or group to get into alternative sports?
Active Kids Get Cooking
This will help us to learn about cooking and the kinds of delicious food we can eat to keep us healthy. An Active Kids Get Cooking website will help us with everything we need to get going. What should be on the website? What else could Sainsbury’s do to support cooking in our school or group?
Active Kids Enterprise
If we like this idea, we can learn all about how a supermarket business works. It could be like a computer game but more true to life. We would get to solve problems, such as what to do if the supermarket runs out of things, and look at how to manage the staff and how the money works. What are your ideas for the website? What other school or group activities could be included in this idea?
Your Active Kids
We can take this idea in which ever direction we like. Sainsbury’s suggests it could be about music or environment. If we choose music, we might want help with putting on concerts or recording our own music for example. If we would like to have a project that helps to protect the environment, we might want to learn about helping to save endangered animals and birds, or perhaps making our own wildlife area or recycling area. Or we can think of a completely new idea. What are your ideas for environment or music projects? They could be something you do in class or something for a website. Or have you got your own new idea?
After the presentation, ask the children and teachers or group leaders if they have any questions. If you don’t know the answers, you could say that you will check out the Active Kids Get Talking website and let them know the answer later.
Here are some questions that you might be asked:
Q. If we’re not on the school council/forum, can we still help?
A. Yes, we need all the help we can get and we promise to listen to your ideas. Just talk to your class rep.
Q. Are the teachers or group leaders allowed to help us?
A. Yes, we would like the whole school or group to be involved. Sainsbury’s wants us all to work together.
Q . Should we ask our parents to help?
A. Yes; if any parents would like to help, they would be really welcome. Please talk to them about it.
Q. How much time have we got?
A. The closing date for sending your entry is 23 May.
Say that the school council/forum reps will be giving everyone more details over the next few days. Ask children and teachers or group leaders to think and talk about Active Kids Get Talking. You could also set up a suggestion box in the entrance hall for people to post any great ideas they come up with.
Good luck and have fun!
