It’s up to you to decide how best to talk to other students and teachers or group leaders about how they can get involved with Active Kids Get Talking, but one good way is to give a short presentation in assembly.

You could use the PowerPoint presentation to get you started, or use some of it and change the rest to suit yourself.

Active Kids Get Talking: what’s it all about?

  • Sainsbury’s Active Kids is looking for new ideas for their next schools’ and groups’ project.
  • They've come up with some new Active Ideas. We get to tell them what we think about their ideas, as well as coming up with our own suggestions.
  • They also want to know what our school is missing or needs help with and how one of the Active Kids idea could help with that.
  • We enter via the Active Kids Get Talking website. Schools and groups with the best ideas will be invited to become regional consultants.
  • That means we're invited to a regional Active Conference between 16 and 27 June where representatives from all the consultant schools and groups help Sainsbury's to work out which idea to develop and exactly how it will work.
  • After the regional Active Conferences, Sainsbury’s will draft an Active Kids Manifesto with our suggestions for the future of Active Kids.
  • The manifesto will be presented and discussed at a national conference in September, where students delegates will discuss and vote on the Manifesto and set the future course for Active Kids.

The five Active Ideas are:

Active Kids Time

Sainsbury’s will help us to have more clubs and activities to enjoy at lunchtimes or after school. What do you think these clubs and activities should be?

Active Kids Alternative Sports

Sainsbury’s will help us to try out all sorts of different sports that we haven’t tried before. What should these sports be? And how could Sainsbury’s help our school or group to get into alternative sports?

Active Kids Get Cooking

This will help us to learn about cooking and the kinds of delicious food we can eat to keep us healthy. An AK Get Cooking website will help us with everything we need to get going. What should go onto the website? What else could Sainsbury’s do to support cooking in our school or group?

Active Kids Enterprise

If we like this idea, we can learn all about how a supermarket business works. It could be like a computer game but more true to life. We would get to solve problems, such as what to do if the supermarket runs out of things, and look at how to manage the staff and how the money works. What are your ideas for the website? What other school or group activities could be included in this idea?

Your Active Kids

We can take this idea in which ever direction we like. Sainsbury’s suggests it could be about music or the environment.

Music could mean:

  • setting up new bands, singing groups or orchestras
  • putting on concerts
  • recording our own music
  • bringing in a professional musician
  • etc.

Environment could mean:

  • helping to save endangered wildlife
  • developing an area of the school for growing organic food
  • setting up our own recycling area
  • starting up a project for reducing our school’s or group’s carbon footprint
  • etc.

What are your ideas for environment or music projects? They could be something you do in class or something for a website. Alternatively, you can think of a completely new idea – what would you like Active Kids to do for our school or group?

Any questions?

Ask the audience if they have any questions. If you don’t know the answers, you could say that you will check out the Active Kids Get Talking website and let them know the answer later.

What next?

Tell everyone what happens next, eg:

  • The school council/forum will be managing the project in school.
  • We need your help and your ideas. Start thinking about the Active Ideas you like best, and how they could work, and/or what we could do with the Music or Environment idea. Alternatively, should we go for a completely new idea of our own?
  • We will be giving out a questionnaire and talking to all the tutor groups.
  • Come and talk to us too!
  • Have a look at the Active Kids Get Talking website www.get-talking.co.uk next time you’re near a computer.
